Next America's Cup in San Francisco?

Boating and Sailing News - 19 Feb 2010

San Francisco, USA - As sailing enthusiasts around the world cross their fingers that America's Cup races might come to an area near them, the politicking has already started by fans and city officials to bring the racing to their home waters. As the location of BMW Oracle's Golden Gate Yacht Club, San Francisco is now topping the list as a prime location for the 34th America's Cup, but what are the chances of the racing really coming to the City by the Bay, and what, if anything, stands in the way?

San Franciso Sailing at the Big Boat Series

Boating and Sailing News - 14 Sep 2009

San Francisco, USA - Starting in May, San Francisco Bay is home to a strange weather phenomenon.  You can nearly set your watch by the wind pattern, and expect big ocean breezes (25 knots gusting to 30+) pushing fog banks up the Bay until October.  As Mark Twain may or may not have said: "The coldest winter I ever knew was the summer I spent in San Francisco."  It is such a reliable occurrence that sailors hardly check the weather during these months, but it wasn't the case at this year's Big Boat Series, where the atmospheric conditions appeared to have been visiting from someplace else.

Extreme Sailing on 18 Foot Skiffs

Boating and Sailing News - 06 Sep 2009

San Francisco, USA - Sailors competing in the 18 foot skiff regatta last week were treated to some of the best sailing conditions San Francisco Bay can offer. In an area known for predictably high summer breezes, boaters around San Francisco are used to trading warmth for wind, and usually are seen bundled up in foulies when the wind kicks up on the bay nearly every summer afternoon. Not so last week, however, as the rarest of treats was given to skiff sailors from around the world who had come to compete on the 18 footers:  Brilliant sunshine and strong warm winds. It was a good thing too, as the crews needed that sun to dry off.  Most of the teams had at least one dunking in the frigid bay waters as the winds gusted over 28 knots, particularly when those winds blew contrary to the currents under the Golden Gate.

Sailing Under the Golden Gate into San Francisco Bay

Boating and Sailing News - 28 May 2009

San Francisco - Icon to Pacific sailors for centuries, the Golden Gate is the entrance to San Francisco Bay, one of the few natural refuges from the mighty East Pacific.  Due to the relative narrowness of the formation, early European explorers seem to have sailed right by the bay for over 200 years without knowing it was there, and it wasn't until 1775 that the first European ship, the San Carlos, recorded sailing through what was later called the Golden Gate.
