Sweden - The residents of the lovely island of Marstrand appear to be thrilled this weekend as they welcome the Volvo Ocean Race crews to their island, a popular yachting destination off the west coast of Sweden. Marstrand is one of the most famous towns on the Bohuslän coast, renowned for its boating culture, famous Carlsten’s Fortress, and as a playground for royals. It has been a summertime gathering place for boaters since the 19th century, with tourists from all around Europe drawn by the charm of its traffic-free streets and adorable wooden buildings.

Cochin (Kochi), India - The center of the Indian spice trade since the 14th century, Cochin is no stranger to visiting sailors and boats from abroad, but the welcome and fanfare bestowed upon the sailors of this edition of the Volvo Ocean Race was simply phenomenal. More than 50,000 residents and visitors greeted the boats and sailors EACH DAY in Cochin, and as the crews made their way down to the docks today to set off on leg 3, they were bid farewell by their new fans and well-wishers in a turnout which was absolutely astounding.

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet has run into a bit of trouble leaving the Southern Ocean, with the yachts Green Dragon and Puma experiencing some serious damage. Puma received structural damage while slamming off waves on the race from South Africa to India, and the yacht Green Dragon had an even more serious problem when their steering gear failed in a 50 knot squall, causing the boat to accidentaly gybe, and breaking their boom in two.

Cape Town, South Africa - The Volvo Ocean Race is back underway.  After some brief downtime, the fleet is off on the second leg of this crewed 'round the world challenge.  The eight crews said goodbye to their friends, families and supporters in Cape Town on Saturday, sailing out to cheers of farewell under the hot South African sun, and began the 4,450 mile leg to Cochin, India.

Cape Town, South Africa - After breaking the 24 hour monohull record last week, it was no surprise when the Volvo Ocean Race yacht Ericsson 4 was first to sail over the leg one finish line in Cape Town on Sunday. Sailed by an international crew, the team completed the 6,500 mile journey from Alicante, Spain to Cape Town in just 21 days.

New Sailing World Record - Ericsson 4 Breaks the 600 Mile Barrier

The yacht Ericsson 4 has smashed the elusive 600 mile barrier, and set a new 24 hour distance world sailing record for a monohull sailboat!  Skipper Torben Grael and his crew made the record on the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race at 18:54 GMT Wednesday, beating the time set by Sebastien Josse and his crew on ABN Amro Two during the 2006-2007 race.
