Pirates Attack Yacht in the Mediterranean

Corsica, France - A luxury yacht was attacked by pirates on Sunday near Porto-Vecchio (Corse-du-Sud), off the French island of Corsica, according to the gendarmerie. The Tiara mega-yacht, which flies the flag of the Cayman Islands, had just sailed from Sardinia, and had only been anchored in the Bay of Santa Giulia, near Porto-Vecchio for a few hours when four masked men, armed with rifles and revolvers, approached the 55 metre sailboat using a high speed zodiac boat.

The armed pirates quickly boarded the yacht shortly before midnight on Sunday, subduing the 10 crew members and 9 passengers of Tiara. After threatening the crew, the gunmen were shown the boat's safe, forcing the occupants of the vessel to open it, and taking the values contained therein, including 138,000 euros in cash. The pirates then left on board their zodiac, which has yet to be found.

How terrible.

Does this happen often in the Mediterranean?

Armed robberies on yachts are uncommon in the Mediterranean. According to the coast guard (as reported in the French press): Until this attack there had been no notable piracy raids on yachts for several years.

Isn't amazing/coincidental that this should happen, after it became necessary to declare sums of money of 10,000 euros or more to the french customs.

Pirates On The High Seas !!!

Most non-boating people don't believe pirates exist on the high seas !!! Your article is excellent in bringing attention to a very real problem !!! Crews and passengers have to be aware of this rising crisis that is becoming more common !!! Some countries don't allow you have have a firearm aboard, making more difficult to defend yourself in this situation !!! In some cases you are at their mercy anyway because of the man power and high tech equipment they use to out maneuver you !!!

Where was their security?

I would have expected at least two armed guards aboard such a vessel.

Guns on Board

Thank goodness the crew did not have weapons aboard. Instead of a small article in the back of the paper, we would have world wide coverage of a bloodbath. This is an excellent lesson of exactly what should happen. Congratulations to the crew for handling a horific affair with true proffesionalism. Yes, a lot of money went missing, but no one was hurt or killed. All to often in these circumstances, someone turns the hero, and usually the robbers are despirate, scared, and have nothing to loose. Unless you are trained security personel, the first thing that should enter your mind is the tragic demise of Sir Peter Blake. Waving guns to scare these peole away is not an option. Shoot first and make sure you kill them may be but you better be damn sure it is not one of your friends coming back from the pub little late. Again Congratulations Tiara for demonstrating enormous skill and restraint under pressure.

Pirates

It takes 'enourmous skill' to cower and surrender in fear and put yourself at the mercy of lawless criminals? Crime like this only stops when it becomes too dangerous to be a pirate. If you submitt and surrender, there is NOTHING that says they cannot or will not rape you or slit your throat for their personal amusement once you are helpless.

I hear a lot of Blake's name being used to justify cowardice and non-defense, but Blake was the expection, not the rule. To hear some talk, the mere act of self-defense will automatically get you killed because you, as a mere mortal, are incapable of it.

Real world piracy encounters have shown that when the defenders are armed, pirates usually back off. They are not in the business to get killed. Like most criminals, they are bullies and cowards at heart. You do not have to be a member of the SAS with government sanction to defend yourself successfully. Self defense is a human right and a social responsibility.

BTW, you don't 'wave guns around' to scare off pirates. You aim the guns at them and if they do not back off immediately you pull the trigger and kill them. Simple as that.
